The Second Messabout of the New Year (2012)
Plan for the Second FLorida Gulf Coast Traditional Small Craft Association’s messabout on Saturday February 25th, from about 9am to 2pm, weather permitting. It will happen in Bradenton at our neighbor's to the immediate East of the F.I.S.H. Preserve and the F.I.S.H. Boat Works We have the permission of Paradise Bay Estates to use their boat ramp at the southern end of 106th (10600) street and adjacent area for our Messabout. Several members of the FGCTSCA live there. Members of the PBE park (which includes the Sarasota Bay R.V. Park as well), are invited to join us with our thanks. Maybe we will attract some new members and volunteers.
You can launch small single hull boats, kayaks, canoes, etc., here. Larger boats might be more successfully launched across the bay at the Coquina Beach boat launching site. We will have the usual pot luck lunch with continued great expectations of variety and tasty delights. There are no facilities there but we will bring tables and rent a portable toilet. Sorry for the late notice, but it took a bit of time to go through their Board Meeting process. Doug Calhoun

Florida Gulf Coast Small Craft Festival details
The 7th Annual Florida Gulf Coast Small Craft Festival at the Florida Maritime Museum at Cortez is fast approaching (April 20 - 22). The weather looks good: currently fluctuating between the high 70s and the low 80s. For those who want to camp out, the F.I.S.H. The Florida Institute for Saltwater Heritage (check out their website: http://www.cortez-fish.org/) property, which does include the Florida Maritime Museum and the new Boatshop, is ideal for camping: cared for grounds with lots of room, outdoorsy showers available (wear flip-flops, Florida shoes), and lots of good food within walking distance.
Bring a boat if you have one. Compete in the races, compete in boat building or just plan to attend. There will be lots of small boats to look at and get ideas.
For the early arrivals, Friday evening (at 7:00 ), a pot luck/bring a dish to pass dinner has gained a reputation for having a wondrous selection of Florida style culinary delicacies and other good eats which of course creates a friendly atmosphere and new friends.
Saturday is the main day, and you will be able to find information about it on the website: FGCTSCA.weebly.com The site will also have the page with the registration forms and the Small Craft Festival page for photos too. There’s a page with a list of hotels for those coming long distances and who want more comfort than camping out. The speaker for the dinner on Saturday night is yet to be invited
You will be able to ask Bob Pitt, our Boatbuilder, about some of our new acquisitions and the work we have to do on them. Rick Viera and his crew can tell you about their three years of work on the newly restored fishing boat the Smiley and the uses now planned for it. Dave Lucas and some of his boatbuilding crew plan to attend (you may get his email about this event too). So punch 4415 119th Street West, Cortez, Florida 34215 (Corner of Cortez Road West) into your GPS and see you here. Doug Calhoun.
